Dirt bikes and suggested tips for effective riding!
- Riding Postion: Dirt bikes require you knowing the best riding position: we stress standing up in almost all situations. Sit in the apex of a turn but in any difficult terrain, stand up.
- smooth roads? well, okay sit.
- pivot point is the footpegs: use your legs like extra shock absorbers
- arms are like extra front forks
- keep knees and elbows bent
- knees locked into the tank will help
- put your head forward of your centerline
- butt to the rear about an equal amount
- hip to shoulders are straight: you should be balanced fore and aft, and side to side
- look ahead of you not at your front fender: This gives you time to respond
- any time your legs burn, lock your knees more to take some load off
- grip handle bars with index and/or middle finger covering your brake and clutch,[You need to keep the brake lever covered for fastest response time; don't grip the bar with your whole hand or to hard,. The V from thumb to index finger on each side can maintain control most of the time.]
- you need, more grip in bad ruts, etc.
- try to keep wrists straight
- Handle bar set up. The upward taper of the bar should be about parallel with the fork. The result is the grips are still basically level but the bar is a little forward and up.
- Levers: Both should be slightly down
- Shifter: Up about 1 to 11/2 inches from footpeg top. [This is to keep your toe from going to low when up shifting and getting caught by a hard object and pulled under the peg][This will make you raise our foot slightly to downshift]
- Rear Brake: Make it even with the footpeg with not much play until engagement. [Do not raise it higher than the footpeg, because you tend to ride the brakes and heat them up, possibly losing the rear brake]
- Brake fluid: Some dirt bikes get an oil change before every race
- Brake drill: Stopping is 70% front, and 30% back, use both to keep from spinning around
- keep your body position back so your arms can take the load; don't sit
- and practice is a great help.
- Turning drill: On a level area, practice.
- don't brake in the corner, finish the curve before braking
- It is okay to put your inside foot out and to the front; use it if you need it
- sit on the outside (of the turn) of the bike.
- place weight on the outside footpeg [dirt bikes lean in]
- get the corner finished so the dirt bikes aimed where you want to go before turning on the gas
- Hill climb: Going up. Lean your body weight forward
- keep your butt a few inches off the seat. [So you are not standing, way up in the air]
- maintain momentum when climbing
- get as much speed as possible before starting up
- shift as you go up before you bog down
- throttle control: try not to spin the rear wheel
- Hill decent: Going down. Hold your body weight back
- standing up with your butt off the back of the bike
- arms are almost straight
- apply both front and back brake [this stabilizes you]
- dirt bikes are a lot of fun and saftey should always be considered.
